What is the Empire State Building Climbers Flag meme?
Empire State Building Climbers Flag shows two people dressed all in black, wearing black caps, perched at the very tip of the Empire State Building's spire. Beside them a huge black banner billows out over a blurred New York skyline far below. Because the banner is blank in the template, it reads like the biggest billboard in the city, so the meme writes whatever message someone wants to broadcast to the whole world on it: a personal motto, a petty office complaint, a hot take or a brand announcement. The joke is the contrast between the dangerous, dramatic stunt and the small or silly message.
Origin: The climbers are rooftoppers Angela Nikolau and Ivan Kuznetsov, who climbed the spire in 2026, unfurled a black banner with a message about love and power and got engaged at the top. The photos went viral, and people began editing new text onto the blank flag.
Also known as: Empire State Building Climbers, Empire State Building Flag, Angela Nikolau and Ivan Kuznetsov, Empire State Building Banner.
How to use the Empire State Building Climbers Flag meme
There is one box, and it goes on the black flag. Write the message as a slogan or proclamation, since the flag feels like a public announcement. Short, punchy lines in a solemn tone work best, a parody of the original's "when X beats Y, the world knows Z" phrasing is a popular choice.
Good targets: office habits (reply-all, unnecessary meetings), sports rivalries, game patch complaints, food opinions and grand statements about tiny problems. White or light text shows up best on the dark fabric.
