What is the Gru's Plan meme?
Gru's Plan is a four-panel sequence of Gru from Despicable Me presenting a scheme on a flip chart. In the first two panels he confidently points at steps one and two. The third panel reveals a step that ruins the plan, and in the fourth he turns back to the same board with a stunned double take, because he only now noticed what it says. The joke is self-sabotage hiding in plain sight: a plan that seems airtight until the person presenting it actually reads their own third point. It is the go-to format for strategies with an obvious flaw.
Origin: Gru is the villain-turned-dad from Illumination's Despicable Me (2010). The four panels were stitched from the film into an editable plan comic that took off on Reddit and other meme sites around 2018.
Also known as: Gru Plan Meme, Despicable Me Plan, Gru Presentation.
How to use the Gru's Plan meme
The four boxes map to the four flip chart pages. Box one and box two are the confident steps of the plan. Box three is the step that sinks it. Box four repeats box three word for word, since Gru is now reading it again in horror.
The flaw in step three should follow logically from the first two, not come out of nowhere. Work, school, budgets, diets and video game strategies are perfect, since everybody has made a plan that unravels the same way.
