What is the Mother Ignoring Kid Drowning In A Pool meme?
The drowning kid pool meme is a family snapshot from a backyard swimming pool: a smiling woman holds a delighted toddler in a ruffled swimsuit up out of the water, while in the foreground an older child, mouth open and eyes rolled up, is barely keeping his face above the surface. Nobody was actually in danger, but the framing makes it look like the mom is cheerfully giving all her attention to the favorite while the other kid goes under. As a labeling meme it shows someone lavishing care on a shiny new thing and neglecting the older, struggling one that needed help first.
Origin: The photo was posted to Reddit's r/pics in April 2018 with a caption about the poster's cousins learning to swim. Redditors quickly started labeling the three people, and later edits added a skeleton at the bottom of the pool for a long-forgotten third victim.
Also known as: Mom Ignoring Drowning Kid, Drowning Kid Meme, Kid Drowning In Pool.
How to use the Mother Ignoring Kid Drowning In A Pool meme
There are three labels. The first goes on the happy toddler being lifted up: the new, popular or easy thing getting attention. The second goes on the kid struggling in the front: the thing that is being ignored even though it obviously needs help. The third goes on the mother: whoever is choosing where the attention goes.
The joke depends on the neglect being both obvious and a little unfair. Software teams and their legacy code, parents and the new baby, game studios and their old titles, streaming services and their cancelled shows all fit. Keep each label to a few words so it fits on the person without covering their face.
