What is the Oprah You Get a Car meme?
Oprah You Get a Car shows Oprah Winfrey in a bright red suit on her talk show set, mouth wide open in an ecstatic shout, one arm flung out with a microphone and the other raised in triumph. It captures the famous moment she gave every audience member a new car, shouting "You get a car!" over and over to screaming guests. As a meme it parodies extravagant giveaways: the top line hands out something to one person, and the bottom line hands it to everyone, usually something nobody wants, like homework, bugs or extra meetings.
Origin: On a 2004 season premiere of The Oprah Winfrey Show, Oprah surprised her entire studio audience with new Pontiac G6 cars. The repeated "you get a car" line became a pop culture catchphrase.
Also known as: You Get a Car, Oprah Giveaway, Everybody Gets a Car, Oprah You Get a Car Meme.
How to use the Oprah You Get a Car meme
The top box says "you get a X" and the bottom box escalates to "everybody gets a X!" The X can be generous or terrible, and terrible is usually funnier: a group project, a software update, a cold going around the office.
It also works for someone handing out things far too freely, like a ref giving yellow cards or a teacher assigning essays. Repeat the exact same item in both lines so the escalation reads instantly.
