What is the Salt Bae meme?
Salt Bae is Turkish chef and restaurateur Nusret Gökçe in his signature pose: round sunglasses, slicked-back hair and a white tank top, his wrist bent sharply and fingers held high so a pinch of salt trickles down his forearm. In the original video the salt lands on a freshly carved steak. The gesture is absurdly theatrical for something as simple as seasoning, which is exactly why it caught on. As a meme, Salt Bae represents adding a final flourish with maximum swagger: sprinkling sass onto a comeback, extra drama onto gossip, one more feature onto an already finished project. It can be admiring (doing something with style) or mocking (overdoing something small).
Origin: Gökçe posted a short video of himself slicing and salting a steak in this exaggerated way in January 2017. It went viral within days, earned him the Salt Bae nickname and helped make his Nusr-Et steakhouses internationally famous.
Also known as: Saltbae, Nusret Salt, Salt Guy.
How to use the Salt Bae meme
The top box is often left empty or used for the setup: what is being prepared or served. The bottom box describes the extra thing being sprinkled on, the way the default caption says "pours salt on it". Phrases like "adds a little extra" or "sprinkles in" mirror the gesture.
It suits finishing touches done with unnecessary flair: a passive-aggressive email signature, an emoji at the end of a breakup text, a celebration after a goal, a teacher adding one more question to the exam. The pettier the extra ingredient, the funnier the pose becomes.
