What is the Place, Japan meme?
Place, Japan is a two-row Wojak comic. In the top row a bearded, glasses-wearing Wojak frowns with mild disinterest at a crude MS Paint landscape of green hills, a river and a sun. In the bottom row the same character turns into a screaming, hands-up Soyjak in front of exactly the same drawing. Only the label changes: the top says something plain like "mountain", the bottom adds ", Japan". The joke mocks how the same ordinary thing suddenly becomes amazing once it has a trendy or foreign label attached, and by extension anyone whose excitement depends entirely on branding.
Origin: The format came out of 4chan Wojak comics around 2020, first as a jab at people who romanticize anything Japanese. It later widened to any label that makes the same thing seem more exciting.
Also known as: Thing, Japan, Place Japan Meme, Soyjak Japan.
How to use the Place, Japan meme
There are two text boxes, one in the gray label at the top right and one at the bottom right. The top box names something plain. The bottom box names the exact same thing with the magic label attached, most often ", Japan", but it can be any brand, origin or buzzword.
Keep both lines nearly identical so the comparison is obvious. Swapping "Japan" for "AI-powered", "artisanal", "limited edition" or "from the anime" keeps the format fresh.
