What is the Squid Game meme?
This Squid Game template stacks two portraits of Seong Gi-hun, player 456, played by Lee Jung-jae. On top he has shaggy, longer hair and a huge, sheepish grin against a pink wall, his look from the first season. Below he has a short, severe haircut and stares straight ahead with a cold, hardened expression, his look from the second season. The pairing works as a before and after: the cheerful, naive version of someone at the start of something, and the grim version after it has broken them.
Origin: Squid Game, the South Korean survival drama created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, premiered on Netflix in September 2021 and its second season arrived in December 2024. Fans paired Gi-hun's two looks as soon as the new season's images appeared.
Also known as: Squid Game Before and After, Gi-hun Season 1 vs Season 2, Player 456 Meme.
How to use the Squid Game meme
The top box goes with the smiling Gi-hun: the start of a job, class, game, relationship or season. The bottom box goes with the grim one: the same thing after reality sets in.
It is strongest when the two captions name the same thing at different stages, like "first day of the semester" and "finals week". You can also use the template's in-show framing, with "player 456" up top and an elimination line below. Keep both lines parallel so the contrast between the faces does the work.
